Important Information on Buying Oak Handrails

When making your choice on buying White Oak Handrails there is quite a lot of differences between the handrails that may not be clear.
1 . Colour Variation

1 . Colour Variation

First and foremost Oak is a Natural Timber Product so you are going to get an element of natural colour variation with all products.

2. Different Oaks ?

There are 3 main species of Oak you will find handrails produced from in the UK

1. American White Oak
American White Oak and European White Oak are similar in colour overall, American White Oak has a wider range of natural colour variation, it is generally more available than European Oak and sligthly cheaper to buy in its sawn state but a lower yeild is achieved when trying to produce A Grade components. Suitable for Interior and Exterior work

2. European Oak or European White Oak
European Oak is similar in colour to American White Oak. Colours are more consistant with European Oak, European Oak can have figuring within the grain. Suitable for Interior and Exterior use.

3. American or Canadian Red Oak
This is a Light Oak it is suitable for use inside, only to be mixed with American White Oak components if a wood stain is going to be used. Quite a wide range of Colour Variation.

Sustainability

All the Oak used in the Select Oak Range of Handrails and Baserail is sourced from US and European sustainable sources.

Concearn has been raised to the White Oak Products coming out of China as they have a defecit of More certified Oak coming out of China than they have Accounted for Going in.

Almost all Russian-origin Mongolian oak is exported to China, and from there a proportion of it is manufactured and sold into major western markets as white oak.
3. Where are the Made ?

3. Where are the Made ?

A number of the handrails we offer are produced here in hte UK and some are produced in the Far East.

The production methods used on the handrails are very different.

The Handrails sourced from China are high volume production. There is limited availablility of quality long oak and these handrails have to be highly engineered and you will see joints along the length of the handrail. The two Major Importers / Distriburors of Oak Handrails in the UK are Cheshire Mouldings and Richard Burbidge but be aware there are a number of smaller companies importing from China also with there own specifications but these are generally a lower quality handrail.

The Select Oak Handrails produced in the UK are produced with a EdgeLam colour matched construction with No Joints along the Length.
Construction Details

Construction Details

Chinese Produced HR Profile Handrail from our Cheshire Range, Far East Production.

Here you can see the end detail of the Cheshire Pattern HR Handrail.

The Top Section and Side sections on this handrail are generally butt jointed in the lengths.
The Inner Centre of the Handrail is a finger jointed construction.

Here you can see the side profile of the Handrail with the butt joint detail shown in the length.

I would class this image as showing a fairly good colour match but a greater difference in colour variation should be expected.

Far East Production.
End Profile WOHDR Handrail

End Profile WOHDR Handrail

Here you can see the End Profile of the WOHDR handrail from the Burbidge Range.
Far East Production.

The top section and side sections on this handrail are generally finger jointed in the length. The inner centre of the handrail is a finger jointed construction.
Richard Burbidge WOHDR Handrail

Richard Burbidge WOHDR Handrail

Here looking at the side profile of the Burbidge WOHDR Handrail you can see the Finger Joint detail in the length. Far East Production.

Again as with the Cheshire Pattern HR Handrail I would say this image shows a good colour match but you should expect greater colour variation with some of the joints along the length of a entire handrail.
Far East Produced Handrails

Far East Produced Handrails

Here you can see top of the handrail of the two far eastern produced oak handrail joints side by side.

On the left is the Burbidge Range handail with the Finger Joint and on the right the Cheshire profile handrail with the Butt Joint.

Please note both suppliers can change there specificaton at any time.
End Profile STHR Handrail

End Profile STHR Handrail

The STHR Select Oak Handrail is a UK produced handrail manufactured with an EdgeLam Colour Matched Construction.

Shown Here with a 2 Layer Construction but this can be 3 Layers depending on the availablility of Oak at the right quality. The major benefit with the Sselect Oak Handrails is there are No Joints in the Length!.
End Profile Houston Oak Handrail

End Profile Houston Oak Handrail

This shows the End Profile on the Houston Oak Handrail.

This again is a Select Oak UK produced handrail, it is a two layer construction and the bottom layer has also been jointed in the width.

The Edglam construction uses full length lamels giving you no joints in the length of the handrail only in the section as shown.

With Long Oak in a Prime or Super Prime Grade being limited in availability the Select Oak Edglam Handrails are more expensive to produce than those shown with the Far East production methods and joints in the length.
